Criteria for System Selection

One of the single biggest factors affection system selection is the dead load accounted for by the system and the live load accounted for by saturated system components, soil media and plants. Take for example a simple shallow (extensive) system. Our built in place system which consists of a protective fabric,, drainage panel, filter fabric, growth media and Sedum weighs around 14 pounds (6.5 kg) when dry and 19 pounds (nearly 9 kg) when saturated (UL tests in Texas and Waltham MA coupled with wind resistance tests we conducted at the top of the Blue Hills in Canton, MA indicates that 15 pounds PSF is the minimal weight required to avoid loss of aggregate). This breaks down to an increase of less than a pound (.4 kg) for the plastic and fiber layers combined; another 3 pounds (1.5 kg) for the soil media and around 3.5 pounds (>1.5 kg) for Sedum or similar groundcovers.

Our soil media is lighter than all other commercial soils available in New England, at this time. You can see from a comparison table that the Botanicals lightweight media not only weighs less at the start but despite its high, >55% adsorption rate, weighs around 6 pounds (<3 kg) per inch (2.5 cm) per SF (30 cm squared) compared with other media.
