Research behind the evolution of the built in place system which we employ has come from several directions. Two of these are shown above. At the upper left are the results of portable photosynthesis measurements which were taken several times (peak and low senescence) to establish comparisons of plant physiology differences of plants used at projects in MA and NH. These tests helped to establish baseline leaf evapotranspiration, stomatic response, carbon in/out and other parameters in order to point to plants with superior adaptive characteristics. On the upper right we see a carbon analysis performed in Boston (UMB) which denotes differences in overall carbon sequestration, over time, comparing five media samples. Media samples ranged from river rock, to a commercial "green" roof media, to a lightweight media which we used until spring 2011 and a biochar-inclusive media. The samples were examined in the laboratory and then during experimental field performance trials. After we were satisfied that the biochar-inclusive blend was horticulturally useful, we proposed it for use on commercial projects. It was incorporated into three roof projects in 2011 in Lowell MA and White River Junction VT.Botanicals Nursery LLC
