Our firm does not believe in a "one soil fits all situations" philosophy. On each project we devise a site specific blend, submit it for test results to a UMass soil lab and then submit that to the GC, architect and client. During the past year and a half we have submitted and been approved for use of specialized nutrient-rich and water retentive media which incorporate calcined clay, humus or superhumus (forest based), pyrolyzed biochar (made by us) and other ingredients. Biochar-amended media were found to be superior according to nutrient, pH, CEC, organic matter, soil carbon and physical characteristics tests (Licht, Christian and Hannigan, 2012).There is a definite relationship between plant physiology, soil ecology and soil depth when it comes to winter and summer hardiness. A biochar based growth medium can be designed for even the coldest situations (i.e., Mt. Washington Hotel in New Hampshire and the Veterans Administration in White River Junction, Vermont).
