The most difficult to source dwarfs are the trees; above left is a tree which I discovered and propagated from Wonderland at Mt. Desert, ME. In the middle is Pinus banksiana, one of the serotinous cone pine found at Schoodic Point in downeast ME; and on the right is a tiny bear oak which was found in a pitch pine/scrub oak habitat in MA. These dwarf trees are often found in pine and stone barrens, scrub, cliffs and rockeries. One of the reasons for their hardiness (summer and winter) stems from their outsized leaf and needle surface. With the proper care, soil and some bunching in microterrain to afford either shade or relief from late day sun, these are plants which can do well even without a steady source of storm water or irrigation.
