Nutrient Holding Capacity Weight Restrictions and How to Address Them Criteria for System Selection Water Holding Capacity
Besides concerns about weight, nutrient and water holding capacity are the requisites for successful horticulture on "green" roofs. Since 1987 we have been testing a variety of soils, organics, fertilizers, irrigation strategies on the ground. Now we can get a better idea of how this works on a roof. Above is a careful comparison of major macronutrients (parts per million) among commercial growth media and one created in the lab at UMass which we are now using in the field.
