Over the past twenty-five years we have tested over forty types of dwarf shrubs, including azalea and sweet fern, mountain laurel, crowberry, bearberry, bunchberry, partridgeberry, mountain cranberry, low bush blueberry. Beginning with the Jewell Terrace Mt. Washington Hotel project where we utilized 46 native species (MA, NH and ME), subsequent projects such as the 60,000SF Natick Collections roof utilized many dwarf and full sized shrubs--some thirty in all. As you will see from looking at dwarf trees on an accompanying page, greater than expected lead or needle surface area combined with plenty of fibrous roots somewhat close to the surface along with thick leaf cuticle, lend these plants to survival possibilities on "green" roofs.
